Democrats Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Execution
Democratic officials demonstrated fury after Donald Trump alleged a contingent of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and declared they should be arrested and punished "with execution" following their publication of a disputed video.
The Recording That Sparked the Debate
The clip, published on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic congress members who formerly served in defense or intelligence capacities.
"Like us, you all swore an oath to defend and uphold this founding document," the representatives stated in the short video. "At present, the threats to our constitution don't only come from abroad, but from right here at home. Our regulations are clear, you can decline illegal orders, you can reject improper directives, you should refuse illegal orders. No one has to execute directives that violate the law or our national charter."
Trump's Angry Reaction
The video message seemed to prompt a furious reaction from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump published on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another publication, he declared: "This represents really bad, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their statements cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Representatives Answer
Following Trump's comments on that day, House Democratic leader released a joint declaration censuring the comments.
"Violent politics has no position in this nation," they declared. "Congress members who participated in the video all acted our nation with tremendous patriotism and honor. We strongly censure Donald Trump's appalling and risky threats of violence against members of Congress, and call on GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also stated that they had been in contact with protective services "to guarantee the protection of these representatives and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these radical online messages and withdraw his violent rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the declaration added.
Lawmakers' Firm Response
The lawmakers who were featured in the video also released a statement.
"We are ex-military personnel and defense specialists who love this country and took an pledge to protect and defend the constitution of the United States," they declared. "This commitment is permanent, and we aim to honor it. No intimidation, coercion, or incitement will deter us from that fundamental obligation."
"The significant point is that the ex-president views it liable to punishment by execution for us to restate the law," they added. "Our service members should understand that we have their backs as they fulfill their pledge to the national charter and obligation to obey only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "Every American must join forces and condemn the ex-president's calls for our death and ideological conflict. This is a period for moral clarity."
More Governmental Responses
The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's statements and shared on online networks: "It's important to understand: the former president is calling for the capital punishment of public representatives."
He continued: "This represents an direct THREAT. All senators, all representatives, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this right away and absolutely."
The Conservative official supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "It is very dangerous, you have leading members of the legislature telling military personnel to disobey orders, I think that represents without precedent in the nation's past."
The GOP official also allegedly stated to journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the offense of sedition" but that "attorneys have to parse the language and determine all that."
White House Statement
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when inquired by a media member, "Would the president want to execute elected officials?", the executive branch representative responded: "Certainly not."
"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the spokesperson stated. "You have current representatives of the US Congress who conspired to arrange a digital communication to personnel of the national defense, to active duty service members urging them to ignore the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She added: "The integrity of our armed forces depends on the hierarchy, and if that structure is broken, it can result in people getting killed, it can cause confusion, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are essentially promoting."
