New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
Authorities shared security footage Monday of a man sought in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt were reported.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was expected to be an important component of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
