A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.
The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled significant concerns over construction quality.

Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
