NY Unveils Portal for Public to Submit Immigration Footage Following Detentions of 4 US Citizens
The state attorney general has introduced a recent reporting form encouraging residents to provide photos and videos of immigration raids around New York. This step comes just a day after a high-profile enforcement action disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, prompting large-scale demonstrations.
US Citizens Arrested In Raid
A US congressman announced during a news conference that four citizens were detained and detained for "nearly 24 hours" following the previous day's operation. Protests occurred in New York on consecutive evenings.
"All New York residents is entitled to reside free from terror," state officials stated in a release.
"Anyone who observed and documented ICE activity during the raid, I encourage you to submit that evidence with us. We are pledged to examining these accounts and evaluating any wrongdoings."
Portal Features
The form provides fields to upload visual evidence of the incident, plus a section to indicate geographic details. Prior to sending, submitters must tick a checkbox that confirms that "the attorney general could utilize any materials, images, or footage in a legal proceeding, such as in a legal proceeding or official statement."
Information about the ICE Action
The Chinatown raid, which observers say included dozens of ICE personnel, took place in a popular neighborhood of Manhattan where counterfeit purses, items, goods and merchandise are sold daily in large quantities – typically to sightseers.
Recordings of the operation show numerous hooded and equipped federal agents securing and holding a person, and pushing back bystanders. Masses of New Yorkers followed the officers through the streets. An armored truck was also seen moving along the Manhattan avenues.
Political Response
In a Wednesday press conference organized with the New York immigrant rights coalition, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democrat, stated that four nationals were detained by ICE for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no situations where four American citizens should be taken for no reason." He clarified the individuals were freed on the following day with no charges filed.
"There's a clear purpose here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," the congressman remarked. "This represents a military-style operation to create conflict. It is merely a justification to provoke conflict for this administration to utilize the troops to stop unrest that they themselves caused."
Widespread Condemnation
Anger over the immigration operation rapidly grew – all three political contenders denounced the operation, as did Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Once again, the current administration opts for authoritarian theatrics that generate terror, rather than security. It needs to cease," a political candidate stated.
NYC community groups expressed outrage also.
"Federal officers descended on Chinatown in NYC with armored transports, covered personnel and protective equipment to target local sellers attempting to earn income. This action had nothing to do with citizen protection and focused completely on intimidating residents and areas," said the head of a major immigrant coalition.
ICE Policies
Official guidelines prohibits the detention of US citizens and the organization has claimed it will not arrest or detain citizens. However, investigative journalism has discovered that over 170 American nationals have been taken illegally by immigration authorities since the beginning of the existing leadership.
Recent Pattern
Enforcement actions have been cropping up increasingly in the state and around the country recently.
An October operation in the city center was the earliest reported action on an housing center of the present government. Protests opposing federal operations are commonplace along with accusations of violence and inhumane treatment.
Most recently, a document filed by civil rights groups stated inadequate care of pregnant women in detention centers.
