The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack
No fewer than 16 individuals were killed and over 40 were wounded when assailants shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have called a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were taken to the hospital.
The victims are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She described the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
