The North London club has confirmed that its much-debated sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda will expire in the coming June.

Background and Scrutiny

The partnership, said to be worth around £10 million annually, was first established and has since faced significant scrutiny.

This criticism is due to Rwanda's alleged support for the M23 rebel group in ongoing conflicts in the eastern region of the adjacent DRC.

In February, Arsenal was criticized for issuing a severe rebuff to the government of the DRC by declining to meet with Congolese diplomat Thérèse Wagner to discuss the partnership.

Partnership Structure and Objectives

Visit Rwanda functions as a division of the the country's development agency, which is a public entity.

It is widely believed that Arsenal committed to and continued this partnership primarily to expand their following across the continent.

Nonetheless, the partnership has now terminated after both parties “collectively determined” to end their collaboration.

“Collaboratively, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have outperformed the primary aims of the partnership – promoting conservation and responsible tourism, encouraging numerous followers to discover the country, and creating a lasting foundation for tourism growth,” stated an official Arsenal statement.

The announcement added that the partnership has also supported Rwanda's objective to emerge as an global sports center in Africa and stage additional international competitions while executing grassroots football initiatives that have supported many aspiring footballers and coaches enhance their abilities and inspire greater participation in sport across the country.

Executive Perspective and Fan Reaction

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's CEO, characterized the deal as a “significant journey” and claimed it had been “propelling” the club's ambitions.

However, this perspective was not shared by a portion of the Gunners' supporters, with the protest movement Gunners for Peace staging protests outside the Emirates Stadium during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against PSG in the end of April.

Protesters displayed a sign stating “Drop Visit Rwanda” and handed out sleeves to cover up the Rwanda branding on uniforms.

Industry Perspective and Fellow Clubs

During that period, PSG continued their sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda until 2028.

At the same time, the Spanish club inked a recent contract for the identical duration that has resulted in the emblem appearing on the La Liga side's male and female kits.
