We are verifying video footage and photographs shared earlier today that depict the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is under way.
The initial step to check the site of where the pictures originated was based on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.
Locating additional structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
