Why Prince Andrew Has Relinquished His Official Titles – and What It Means for the Monarchy
Through a statement issued by Buckingham Palace, Prince Andrew has declared he is relinquishing his royal titles, such as the Duke of York. Below are the details of what has been announced – and what remains unchanged.
What Has Andrew Announced?
After previously stepped down as a active member of the monarchy in 2019, Andrew has now decided to “take additional measures” and agree to refrain from using the “title or the awards which have been conferred upon” him.
But he also used the statement to make a point of rejecting – consistent with his past statements – the allegations of misconduct made against him; albeit after settling a substantial sum to resolve the legal claim brought by Virginia Giuffre – a settlement in which he admitted no liability and firmly denied all allegations of improper conduct.
There has been persistent pressure toward the royal institution over the allegations involving the prince – particularly after his disastrous Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis in 2019. He presently states he is acting to protect the royal family from additional harm resulting from media scrutiny.
Has the King Stripped Him of His Titles?

The anti-monarchist campaign group Republic has also said the move is “insufficient and delayed”, adding: “Andrew remains facing allegations of sexual misconduct and misuse of position. He should be divested of every honor and his navy rank and should face a legal probe. Not using archaic honors is not a penalty that matches the accusations.”
